Application to the JSMC SUMMER SCHOOL 2025

Welcome to the BITE application system for the first Summer School 2025 of the Jena School for Microbial Communication (JSMC) of Friedrich Schiller University, Germany.

Who can apply?

The Summer School is open to recent graduates of a Diploma or Master’s program in biosciences, biochemistry, bioinformatics, or related fields who are interested in pursuing a doctorate in Microbial Communication. Selected candidates will get the opportunity to complete a two-week program consisting of scientific modules, a lecture series, workshops, and industry visits accompanied by engaging social events. Highly motivated candidates will have the possibility of presenting themselves as suitable candidates for possible PhD positions to the participating research groups.

Application requirements

  • Master’s degree in biosciences, biochemistry, bioinformatics, or related fields obtained before the deadline for application
  • Above-average grades
  • Motivation letter
  • Curriculum vitae
  • High level of proficiency in English

You will be asked to upload digital copies of all documents requested. All files should be provided as PDFs, with a maximum file size of 5 MB each. If any document is not issued either in English or German, a certified translation is needed. In case of a certified copy, please also upload the original as well. All fields and uploads marked with an asterisk (*) are mandatory and require to be filled to finish your application.

Information on the application process

The application process will take approx. 10 min, provided you have all the necessary information and documents ready.

During the application process, you will be asked to indicate all modules, lectures, workshops, and industry visits you would like to participate in. You can select up to altogether 7 modules, workshops, lectures, and industry visits for your individual Summer School program. Additionally, to the method modules the scientific program offers selected candidates the opportunity of on-site visits to the Bio-Science industry in and around Jena, participate in lectures on state-of-the-art live-cell imaging with our collaborators from overseas, and get in touch with PhD representatives and spokespersons of our graduate school as well as having chats with the university officials.

You can navigate back and forth in the system to edit and change previously entered data. You may pause your registration at any time for a maximum of 25 days and continue when you’re ready.

Please note that we usually receive high numbers of applications. As we want to give every candidate a fair chance, and we are treating and considering every application individually, the application process may take a while. We kindly ask for your patience during the evaluation process. You will be notified about the decision on your application as soon as possible.
