PhD Scholarships (Landesgraduiertenstipendien) 2025

According to the Thuringian Act on State Scholarships (Thüringer Graduiertenförderungsverordnung) and the Thuringian Higher Education Act the Friedrich Schiller University awards PhD scholarships ("Landesgraduiertenstipendien"). The earliest start of funding is 1 January 2025.

Scholarship details

The amount of the scholarship is at least € 1,400 per month. The duration is three years. An extension for a fourth year is possible. In addition, further extensions may be granted due to the care of children, the care of relatives and due to the applicant's own serious illness or disability.. 

Who can apply?

You can apply for a "Landesgraduiertenstipendium" if you

  • have demonstrated above-average academic and examination performance,
  • have been accepted by at least one supervior at Friedrich Schiller University
  • meet the admission requirements for a doctorate at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena,

Documents to be submitted

  • curriculum vitae
  • an Exposé of your PhD project, containing the aims, their derivation and reasons, current research, methods, the schedule of your project and relevant literature (5-10 pages without the bibliography)
  • a scan of your the university degree certificates (e.g. Bachelor and Master)
    with overview of grades / transcript of records

Further part of the application is a confidential reference by your supervisor, containing information about the PhD project and the personal and scientific qualification of the applicant. Please ask your supervisor to submit the form (German version | English Version) directly to graduiertenstipendien@uni-jena.de.

Assessment procedure

The scholarships are awarded by a commission of the university senate. Members of this commission are the non-student members of the senate's committee for young researchers and the representative for equal opportunities. The awarding commission is headed by the Vice-President for young researchers and diversity management.

Applications will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

  • university studies finished in an appropriate time,
  • outstanding exam results that show the applicant’s special qualification for research
  • a scientifically complex and demanding dissertation project, which can be finished within three years and is meant to be an important contribution to science.
